5 Things Inspiring Me: December 2024
Holiday travels, vlogmas challenge, and j-pop cover art.
Haleiwa, 12/19/24
Happy holidays! Iβm writing this to you from Tokyo while taking a break from stuffing myself with all the amazing onigiris and pastries this country has to offer. ππ±π‘π£
This month Wes and I were jet-setting all across SF, Hawaii, Seoul, Kyoto, and Tokyo. Itβs been a busy few weeks but every day has been full of spontaneous moments and creative inspiration.
Travel vlogs are coming soon but in the meantime, hope you have a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones. π
wow I just realized this is my 10th annual holiday card! π³
π CHEERFUL NEWS
I successfully completed the βvlogmasβ challenge! πππΉ I posted 24 videos for 24 days of December, including a mix of talking head, vlog, and travel inspo format videos. It was tough to get through it all but fun challenge and Iβm really happy I did it! I shared my reflection and process here.
I created a winter J-Pop playlist βοΈ To get in the mood for holiday season in Japan, Iβve been listening a lot of j-pop and compiled this playlist called, White Paradise: Winter J-Pop Winter Hits. Itβs been the perfect playlist to listen to while walking through the streets of Tokyo. I also shared my process here.
β¨ 5 THINGS INSPIRING ME
1. ARTIST: SolarioSolario is a Oahu-based artist that draws vintage and Hawaii-inspired illustrations. Heβs collaborated with brands like Kahala and Romer Hotels, and draws inspiration from midcentury modern design and iconic Hawaiian landmarks that brings in a wave of nostalgia. Check out his work here. |
2. GALLERY: Greenroom GalleryGreenroom is a gallery located in Haleiwa, Oahu that sells contemporary surf-inspired art and goods, including work from Solario, Nick Kuchar, and Jack Soren. They also host an annual music, art, and film festival in Yokohama and 2025 will be their 20th anniversary. Check out the gallery here. |
3. SMALL BIZ: HIGHTIDEHightide is a stationery and office supply brand based in Japan. It houses several microbrands including Penco and New Retro, which all consist of goods with modern and retro styles. Theyβve been around since 1994 and have stores in Shibuya, Fukuoka, Sapporo, LA, and Brooklyn. (And yes, I bought a ton of cute stuff from their store on my trip) Check out the shop here. |
4. SPORTS: Vans Pipe MastersWe were lucky to catch the finals of Pipe Masters this month. Itβs an annual surf competition held at THE Banzai Pipeline in North Shore of Oahu and the views and energy from the crowd was so exciting. We saw many athletes take on massive waves, including Nathan Florence who was crowned the winner. Check out the highlights here. |
5. VIDEOS: Colleen YuHuan Huan (Colleen) Yu is a video creator that I discovered on IG who creates the most peaceful, thought-provoking short form videos. I love the color grading and type treatments she adds to her content and itβs been giving me a lot of inspiration for what I want my content to look like in 2025. Here are some of my faves: A, B, C. Check out her videos here. |
