5 Things Inspiring Me: January 2025

LA fires, Sundance, and Kyoto shopping recs.

Venice, 1/20/25

Wow, January was a wild month - kicked off the year strong training for my half ironman, only to quickly pause once my city was in flames. It’s been a rough start to 2025 but I hope you’re hanging in there. ❤️‍🩹

In tough times like this, I like to turn to art. And this time I collaborated with my sister to create something for our LA community. ✨

We launched a a set of postcards to raise funds for the LA Wildfire Relief efforts.

These postcard can be sent to anyone that’s been impacted by the wildfires - survivors, first responders, creatives, even yourself. Every postcard purchase comes with a free firefighter bear sticker and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to California Community Foundation’s Wildfire Recovery Fund.

Even if you don’t purchase, consider sharing this post with your friends and family. Thanks and stay strong friends. 🙏

🙌 CHEERFUL NEWS

  1. I attended Sundance Film Festival 🎬 Sundance has been on my bucket list and I finally caught a glimpse of it during my Utah visit! 5 THINGS INSPIRING ME

1. ARTIST: Kenji Tsukamoto

Kenji is a Utah-based documentary filmmaker I was so excited to meet at Sundance after years of following him from my climbing days. After working with talented filmmakers like Jimmy Chin, he recently released his own documentary, Ashima, following the formative years of elite child rock climber, Ashima Shiraishi.

2. Blog: Jerry Seinfeld and The Pursuit of Mastery

In a world where people are constantly chasing instant gratification, this blog was a humbling reminder about the value of dedicated practice, following the stories of Jerry Seinfeld and Ichiro. Mastery is a lifelong journey and it’s especially important for creatives like us to have a long-term mindset.

3. FILM: It’s What’s Inside

I watched this film on Netflix the other day and it did not disappoint. It’s a mind-bending sci-fi horror film about a group of college friends reuniting and playing an awfully terrifying game. The cinematography and acting was so good and inspiring, and I recently learned that this film was released at Sundance in 2024!

4. MUSIC: 見本盤 (Mihon Reko)

I immediately fell in love when I stumbled upon this youtube channel. It’s a vinyl listening bar based in China that uploads 30 min videos of a few friends hanging out and playing soul, funk, and jazz records. It’s quite a vibe and I enjoy playing it in the background while sipping coffee in my living room.

Check out their sets here.

5. PODCAST: Matthew Dicks on Storytelling

In this episode of The Knowledge Project, author Matthew Dicks shares his process and secrets on writing captivating stories. Some storytelling tips he shared include 1) start with the message you want [the audience] to take away with, and 2) make it relatable.
